Air pollution breaks records in Guangdong

The south China province of Guangdong saw a marked increase in air pollution last year, state media said on Wednesday, with 27 major cities and counties suffering a record number of hazy days.

The province recorded an average of 75.7 days of haze in 2007, the highest level since 1949 and a "marked increase" over normal years, the report said.

"It may take at least 20 or 30 years to bring the haze under control." Wu Dui, an atmospheric studies expert, was quoted as saying.
