Russia to lift ban on killing polar bears

For the first time since the Soviet Union banned the practice more than 50 years ago, the Russian government is to allow hunters to kill polar bears, the New York Times reported on Monday.

But the move is aimed at preserving the creatures. If hunters are allowed to take at least some bears legally, say supporters of lifting the ban, they might be less tempted to break the law in hunting the bears for their meat or fur.

The animals are descending with greater regularity on coastal villages in this part of Russia’s far north as a result of shrinking sea ice generally attributed to global warming, said the report.
