Australia to ban incandescent light bulbs

Australia intends to phase out incandescent light bulbs and replace them with more energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs within three years, the country's environment minister said on Wednesday.

"The most effective and immediate way we can reduce greenhouse-gas emissions is by using energy more efficiently," the New York Times reported environment minister Malcolm Turnbull as saying.

"Electric lighting is a vital part of our lives; globally, it generates emissions equal to 70% of those from all the world's passenger vehicles."

 
Australia already imposes minimum efficiency standards on many kinds of electrical appliances. A similar system will be applied to light bulbs, Turnbull said.
