China missed pollution control targets in 2006

China’s economy grew faster than expected last year, causing the country to miss its goals for pollution control, Xinhua reported on Monday, citing the country's environment watchdog.
Sulphur dioxide emissions increased by nearly 463,000 tonnes, 1.8% higher than the previous year, said Fan Yansheng, director of the pollution control department for China’s State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA).
Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), a water pollution index, also increased by 173,000 tonnes.

China set a goal of reducing the emissions of major pollutants by 10% during the 11th Five-Year Plan period (2006-2010), and the government had sought to cut the two main pollutants by 2% in 2006.
