California to tackle rising seas

Arnold Schwarzenegger, governor of California, ordered preparations for confronting rising sea levels due to global warming, Reuters reported. The most populous American state, California has a Pacific Ocean coastline stretching for more than 1,290 kilometres.

 

By executive order, Schwarzenegger is seeking a study – by the end of 2010 — of how much more the sea could rise, what other consequences of climate change were ahead and how California should react. Recorded sea levels rose 18 centimetres in San Francisco during the 20th century.

 

California is considered the environmental vanguard of government in the United States. The state has its own standards for automobile pollution and a law to cut emissions of carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas contributing to global warming.
