Study finds global carbon emissions are rising rapidly

Global levels of carbon dioxide, the main gas causing global warming, rose significantly in 2007, says a new report. The study, by the Global Carbon Project, indicates that CO2 emissions grew about four times faster since 2000 than during the 1990s.

According to the report, atmospheric CO2 concentration rose to 383 parts per million in 2007. This is 37% above the level at the start of the industrial revolution, and represents the highest level during the past 650,000 years.

The report also stressed that developing countries, such as China and India, now account for more than half the CO2 produced by human activities and must be considered in any potential global warming solution.
