Economic slowdown will not cut carbon pollution

A financial downturn will not stop rising European emissions, Reuters reported analysts as saying. Carbon emissions from large installations are expected to be 1% or 2% lower than expected this year, but overall emissions will rise due to an increased demand for power compared with usage during the mild winter of 2007.

"Electricity demand is up and I think that will outweigh the lower industrial production," UBS analyst Per Lekander was quoted as saying.

Environmentalists also fear that the economic slowdown, in combination with debt and investor nervousness, could stifle renewable energy
projects in both developed and developing countries.
