France to introduce “picnic tax”

The French environment ministry plans to introduce a tax on non-recyclable throwaway plates and cutlery in an effort to encourage customers to buy eco-friendly alternatives, Reuters reported.

The tax would amount to 0.9 Euros (US$1.26) and would tentatively cover 19 categories of products.

The French packaging industry has criticised the move, stating that it will be cost ineffective, difficult to implement and does not target the types of products that create the most waste.
