GM currently earns about US$1 billion by recycling scraps of steel. In North America, the company also recycles cardboard, wood, oil, plastic and other materials.

The automaker, which has more than 160 factories worldwide, recycles all waste from 43 of its vehicle-manufacturing facilities, known as "landfill-free" operations. That number is expected to exceed 80 by 2010.

GM’s recycling effort is part of US carmakers’ efforts to become more environmentally responsible.
