Pandas thrive despite earthquake

Panda numbers are still increasing in the quake-hit province of Sichuan, southwest China, Reuters reported a leading expert as saying.

Around 1,400 of the world’s 1,590 pandas live in Sichuan, the report
said. The earthquake destroyed critical habitat, including 8% of the
Wolong research centre.

Wei Fuwen, from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told Reuters that
pandas in the wild had a larger population and a higher reproduction
rate than previously thought.

"Has it reached an evolutionary dead-end? I think the answer to that
is ‘No’," Wei was reported as saying.
