Chinese mining firms eye Filipino resources

Three of the biggest mining companies in, including Jinchuan Group Ltd., are in talks with companies in the Philippines about possible investments in the country's mining industry, which is concentrated on the easternmost island of Mindanao.
Various environmental and church-based groups are strongly opposed to mining on Mindanao, which they claim will displace indigenous communities and deprive local people of their farming incomes.

Li Jinjun, the Chinese ambassador to the Philippines, defended the Jinchuan Group to the Filipino media which quotes him saying that the group has “huge expertise and experience on environment protection.” He added that the company will implement a number of social welfare projects, including medical and health care for affected communities.
