China plans nuclear plant for quake-hit province

The earthquake-hit province of Sichuan, in southwest China, hopes to build its first atomic energy plant within as little as five years. But experts have chosen a geologically sound site, state media reported.

The country’s top economic planner will soon assess a feasibility study for the 25 billion yuan (US$3.66 billion) project, which would be located at Sanba village, China Daily said.

The chosen site is to the east of the capital Chengdu, while the zone devastated by the May 12 earthquake lies to its west. A team of experts visited the site after the quake to confirm its geology was sound, the report cited an official as saying.

The province currently gets around two thirds of its power from dams, it added, and often suffers electricity shortages in the dry season.
