Blue algae appears in east China lake

Large patches of blue algae have appeared in Chaohu Lake, China's fifth-largest freshwater lake, Xinhua news agency reported.

The algae will not affect supplies of drinking water to city residents in Anhui province, the authorities said. The cities of Hefei andChaohu are situated on the lake.

An official from the provincial environmental protection bureau said 13 square kilometres of blue algae had appeared in the western part of
the lake, the report said.
