Niger signs power deal with China

The government in Niger has signed an agreement for China to help improve the country's power supplies, according to the BBC. Chinese companies recently stepped up their activities in Niger, exploring for uranium and oil in the north and east of the country.

China will transfer several electrical power units to Niger under the agreement, the report cited officials as saying. The deal comes as Niger’s cities have been experiencing power outages.

Niger, a major producer of uranium, is also one of the world’s poorest and most environmentally degraded nations. The country recently came last in Yale and Columbia’s Environmental Performance Index, as the world’s least green country.
