Brown urges cut in food waste

The British prime minister has called on Britons to make saving food as important as saving energy, the Guardian reported. A government report said more than 4 million tonnes of food are wasted each year.

Gordon Brown is attending the first day of the G8 summit in Japan, where rising food and energy prices will be high on the agenda.

Brown was quoted saying: "If we are to get food prices down, we must also do more to deal with unnecessary demand – such as all of us doing more to cut food waste which is costing the average household in Britain around £8 [US$16] per week."
