More than 3,000 people were trapped in Yingxiu, southwest China, state media reported, after heavy rains caused landslides, cutting off the only road into the town.

Hundreds of rescuers were working on Monday to clear the road, which was blocked by large amounts of earth and rocks. "We’re not sure when the road will be reopened as the rain is really a problem. It may cause new landslides," an unnamed local official was quoted as saying.

Yingxiu is three kilometres from the epicentre of the May 12 earthquake. More than two-thirds of its 12,000 residents died in the quake, according to Xinhua news agency.
