China takes aim at land pollution

The government will increase its pressure on companies found contaminating China's soil, state media reported the Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) as saying.

China Daily said the MEP would strengthen measures to hold polluting companies to account. Changes in management structure,  company mergers or dissolution would no longer affect companies’ accountability for soil contamination, the ministry said.

The report said public health hazards were being increasingly triggered by soil pollution. "Land pollution has directly led to declining food quality," the report quoted Sun Tiehang, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, as saying.

Over 10% of China’s farmland is polluted, the report said.
