Paris to offer self-service electric cars from 2009

From the end of 2009, 4,000 electric cars are to be placed around Paris and its outskirts, enabling drivers to help themselves for short journeys, the Guardian reported on Friday.

Bertrand Delanoë, the city’s mayor, was quoted as telling French radio that the scheme "could revolutionise transport" in Paris. An advocate of carbon-neutral, green transport, the mayor already has introduced self-service bicycle hire in the city.

The project’s targeted users include young couples with children who occasionally need a car to shop or travel but who cannot afford to own a vehicle.

Bids for the project will be sought in the coming weeks. No choice of car model has been made yet, nor has a price for the car hire been set.
