Largest quake lake starts to drain

Chinese troops have managed to reduce the water level in an unstable lake formed by the May 12 earthquake, the BBC reported, by channelling water to an abandoned town.

Soldiers used explosives to divert water from Lake Tangjiashan, formed when a landslide blocked a river, into the quake-damaged town of Beichuan, the report said.

More than 30 "quake lakes" were created by the earthquake, which left almost 87,000 people dead or missing.
