China ‘may lease foreign fields’

China could lease or even buy overseas farming land in places like Latin America and the former Soviet Union to beat rising food prices, according to reports on Tuesday.

Soaring grain prices have encouraged the country’s Ministry of
Agriculture to consider the scheme, according to the Beijing Morning
newspaper.

The land could replace arable land in China, the area of which fell
sharply in 2007, much of it lost to rapidly growing cities and
industrial zones, the BBC reported.
