‘Sustainable’ bioplastic can damage the environment

Efforts by supermarkets and industry to replace conventional oil-based plastic with eco-friendly, plant-based "bioplastics" are causing environmental problems of their own, the Guardian reported on Saturday.

Bioplastics can increase emissions of methane — a greenhouse gas many times more powerful than carbon dioxide — from landfill sites,
the report said. Last week the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported a sharp increase in global methane emissions last year.

Additionally, some do not degrade as consumers would expect and need high temperatures to decompose. Many bioplastics, which are made from maize, sugarcane, wheat and other crops, also contribute to the global food crisis by taking over large areas of land previously used to grow crops for human consumption.

The market for bioplastics is growing by 20% to 30% a year.
