Endangered Tibetan antelope triple in reserve

The number of endangered Tibetan antelope, or chiru, in a reserve in northwest China has tripled to 60,000 in the past 10 years, state media reported on Tuesday.

The Tibetan antelope has been listed as endangered by the World Conservation Union because of commercial poaching for their underwool called shahtoosh.

"Breeding is increasing in Kekexili due to the improvement of the environment and the fight against illegal hunting," Cai Ga,director of the vast Kekexili Natural Reserve in Qinghai province, was quoted as saying.

He added that the authorities in Kekexili, also known as Hoh Xil, had "cracked more than 100 cases of armed poaching and seized approximately 4,000 Tibetan antelope furs."
