In December 2006 a six-week survey of the river found no sign of the dolpin, concluding the baiji was "functionally extinct". However, in
August 2007 a man in east China’s Anhui province videotaped what he claimed was a baiji.
The researchers from the EDGE program, a part of the London Zoological Society, will return from China in two weeks with their results,
environmental website mongabay.com has reported.
During the past two decades, conservationists say, the baiji suffered greatly from overfishing, pollution, increased boat traffic and the
construction of dams.
