‘Earth Hour’ to raise awareness on global warming

Twenty-six major cities worldwide are expected to turn off the lights at major landmarks on Saturday, plunging millions of people in to darkness to raise awareness about climate change.

Three hundred and seventy one cities, towns and local governments from Australia to Fiji have signed up for a 60-minute power shutdown at 0900 GMT on March 29. Cities that have officially signed up include Chicago, San Francisco, Dublin, Manila, Bangkok, Copenhagen an Toronto.

 "Switching the lights off for an hour is not going to make a dent in global emissions" said Charles Stevens of WWF. "But what it does do is
 it is a great catalyst for much bigger changes. It engages people in the processes of becoming more energy efficient".
