UK government fails to reduce its carbon footprint

The British government is failing to reduce its greenhouse-gas emissions, a new report reveals, with nearly two-thirds of departments still not on track to meet reduction targets.

The findings are made in the sixth annual review of government operations by the environment watchdog, the Sustainable Development
Commission (SDC).

The report says almost two-thirds of government departments are not on track to meet carbon reduction targets of 12.5% by 2010. Overall
carbon emissions from government offices, however, have fallen by 4% since 1990.

There was also little progress in cutting water use or obtaining electricity from combined heat and power, the report said. Carbon emissions from road vehicles across government actually increased last year.
