Wind power capacity reaches 100,000MW

Global installed wind power capacity will top 100,000 megawatts this month, enough to satisfy the residential electricity needs of around 150 million people, US green group the Earth Policy Institute said on Tuesday.

Driven by concerns about climate change and energy security, one in every three countries now generates a portion of its electricity from
wind, the report said.

Germany is the frontrunner in total installed wind power capacity, the report said, with 22,200 megawatts. But the US, Spain, China, and
India led the world in terms of new capacity added.

China installed 3,450 megawatts of wind capacity in 2007, a 156% increase over 2006. The report noted that this had been encouraged by the country’s Renewable Energy Law, which entered into force in 2006 .
