China reports rise in food-poisoning deaths

China saw a rise of almost a third in food-poisoning deaths last year, Reuters reported on Tuesday, citing the country's Health Ministry.

A total of 258 people died from food poisoning last year, up around 32% on 2006, the report said. There were also 11 cases in which more than 100 people fell ill from food poisoning.

China’s government admits that such problems are most pronounced in the countryside, where lax oversight of small factories often contributes to many food poisoning incidents, the report noted.
