China cleans lake with algae-munching fish

Silver carp fry have been introduced to one of China's most polluted lakes, state media reported on Thursday. The fish will eat foul-smelling blue algae before being caught and sold on to consumers.

More than 50,000 carp are already at work in Chaohu lake, in east China’s Anhui province, the report said. Another 1.55 million will be
added in the next 20 days.

Each fish is expected to have eaten between 40 and 50 kilograms of blue algae when it reaches its adult weight, the report added. Fishermen will then be able to catch them, boosting the local fishing industry.
