China will ban sales of new cars that fail to meet new emissions standards from March, Reuters reported state media as saying.

The new national standards are equivalent to Euro IV standards, the report said, citing Du Shaozhong, deputy director of the Beijing
Environment Protection Bureau.

The tougher emissions standards will extend to heavy vehicles from July, the report added.

Around one-third of the main pollutants in Beijing, such as nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide, come from vehicle exhaust, Du was quoted as saying.
