US must protect walrus, says group

A green group on Thursday filed a petition with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, Reuters reported, demanding protection for the Pacific walrus, an Arctic mammal that is put at risk by shrinking sea ice.

The Center for Biological Diversity, which wants the walrus protected under the US government Endangered Species Act, cited the impact of global warming on the animal’s habitat, the report said. Nursing mothers and calves, they said, need ice shelves to rest and nurse.

"The walrus is an Arctic species and it’s dependent on the sea ice for a lot of its behavior," Shaye Wolf, a San Francisco-based biologist, was reported as saying.
