China snows ‘show risk of new disasters’

Snowstorms and extreme cold in China show that the world must prepare for new types of weather disasters, Reuters quoted United Nations experts as saying on Wednesday.

The events, the report said, show a need for greater global cooperation on global weather forecasting.

"So-called freak weather is becoming more common," Salvador Briceno, head of the UN’s disaster relief agency was quoted as saying,
"reducing vulnerability to unexpected extremes must be a top priority for governments."

UN experts say better seasonal short- and long-term climate predictions are needed if lives are to be saved as weather patterns change.
