China suffers its ‘worst’ winter power shortage

China has banned coal exports for two months in response to the country's worst-ever power shortage, the Times reported state media as saying on Monday, as energy demand outstripped supply by 70 gigawatts.

Coal prices have been soaring and supplies have been disrupted by unusually heavy snow, the report said.

Shortages of coal, which fuels 78% of the country’s electricity supply, have forced the five biggest electricity producers to close 90 power stations in northern and central China.
