European countries given top marks on environment

European nations dominate the top places in a new international ranking of environmental performance, which puts the US last in the G8 countries and ranks China in the bottom 25 nations, the New York Times reported.

The list, which is conducted by researchers at Yale and Columbia Universities, evaluates sanitation, greenhouse-gas emissions, agricultural policies, air pollution and 20 other measures, the report said.

Switzerland, Sweden, Norway and Finland topped the list of 149 countries, while the US scored 39th. India, China and Australia all ranked among the bottom 25 nations.
