2030 target for China lake cleanup

China is taking aim at the pollution and over-exploitation of major lakes, aiming to return them to their original state by 2030, Reuters reported state media as saying on Tuesday.

The State Council ordered, the report said, that by the end of the decade officials should halt the trend of worsening contamination and ensure that any lake polluters are equipped with a permit.

The report added that it has also banned low-tech or highly polluting industries, such as tanning, printing, paper-making and chemicals, from the area around major lakes.

The government also warns that global warming will likely exacerbate droughts in the north and flooding in the south.
