‘Crucial year’ for water transfer project

Chinese local officials must help speed up work on a huge canal to bring Beijing water from adjacent Hebei province during the Olympic Games, Reuters reported a senior government official as saying on Thursday.

To avoid shortages during this year’s Games, the capital plans to transport water from Hebei in a 300-kilometre network of pipes and canals that begins near the city of Shijiazhuang. The project however, the report said, appears to be lagging behind schedule.

Zhang Jiyao, director of the South-North Water Transfer Project , was reported by Reuters as warning officials to "improve project management levels" in what was a "crucial year" for the project, and "strive to create conditions for obstruction-free building".
