Bush signs climate change bill

After years of holding out against proposals to combat global warming, US president George Bush has signed into law an energy bill that includes greater fuel-economy standards for new cars, the Guardian reported on Thursday.

Bush was quoted describing the bill as "a major step toward energy independence and easing global warming".

Environmentalists were reported as expressing gratitude that the US was finally adopting a number of green polices, but warning the measures were too limited and not due to be implemented for years.

Other measures in the legislation include a statutory target of a 70% increase in the use of energy efficient light bulbs and improved energy efficiency targets for fridges, freezers and dishwashers.
