Hong Kong public supports air pollution fight

Most people in Hong Kong are willing to pay for a crackdown on air pollution through road pricing and other measures, Reuters reported an extensive study of public attitudes as saying on Monday.

Of 81,000 people polled in the survey, 77% said they would be bear increases in transport costs in return for better air, through the use of cleaner vehicles and fuels.

The city should establish a "superfund" for cleaning up the environment, Edgar Cheng, chairman of the Council for Sustainable Development, was quoted as saying.

"We figured out that if we want to clear up everything, it will cost HK$20-30 billion [US$2.5-3.8 billion]," Cheng said.
