Great Barrier Reef is doomed, say scientists

The world's largest coral reef system will not survive rising temperatures and increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide, the Brisbane Times said, citing new scientific research.

The World-Bank funded study, which will be published in Science magazine, is some of the most definitive research on the Earth's coral reefs, the report said. It is said to show the future of coral reefs is bleaker than previously thought.

Oceans absorb 30% of the carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere, which is slowly changing the pH levels of the world's oceans.

The Great Barrier Reef is located off Australia's northeastern coast.
