China tells officials not to buy gas-guzzlers

Chinese government officials are being asked to lower their emissions and protect the environment by switching from four-wheel drive vehicles and other gas-guzzling cars, state media reported on Thursday.

"Government-issued cars should set an example," the People's Daily newspaper quoted a notice from the State Council as saying, adding that officials should take public transport on official business and national holidays.

It also noted that hiring out government cars for profit was illegal.
