Antarctica faces catastrophe, says UN chief

Warming temperatures in Antarctica show the growing dangers of climate change, UN secretary-genreral Ban Ki-moon was reported as saying on a visit to the southernmost continent.

"All this may be gone, and not in the distant future, unless we act, together, now," Ban warned, adding, "Antarctica is on the verge of a catastrophe – for the world."

The glaciers on King George Island have shrunk by 10%, Ban said, while some in Admirality Bay have retreated by 25 kilometres.
