Despite giving the authorities months to plan for the arrival of 25,000 protesters at the end of a month-long protest march, which demands that the Indian government makes good on its promises to reform land and tenancy rights, demonstrators were told they could not leave their campsite in central Delhi.
In recent years India’s gathering industrial boom has displaced hundreds of thousands from their land. Land reform groups are linked in an international political movement demanding a more equitable distribution of land. Brazil’s movement of landless farmers has an estimated 1.5 million members.
