China’s investment in pollution control hit a record US$34.24 billion last year, the report said, up 7.5% from 2005.
However, China saw its sulphur dioxide emissions in 2006 reach 25.89 million tonnes, an increase of 1.5%, while overall "discharges of waste water" rose by 2.3%, with domestic sewage rising by 5.8%.
The report said 842 pollution accidents were reported in 2006, including 482 water pollution cases and 232 air pollution cases.
