China targets foreign firms on environmental performance

"Foreign-funded firms" will face the same punishments as domestic companies who are caught violating environmental laws in China, China Daily quoted a senior official as saying on Tuesday.

Ren Longjiang, an official at China’s State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA), made the remarks after Unilever China and the China branch of Hitachi Construction Machinery were found in May to be illegally discharging wastewater in east China’s Anhui province.

"We were surprised to find both companies had pollution problems as they were the only two foreign companies selected at random for the inspection," the report quoted Ren as saying.
