Grim outlook for developing world in climate report

Poor countries will be hit hard as climate change triggers more natural disasters, water shortages and hunger, the leading international scientific body on global warming warned on Tuesday.

The 1,000-page report by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is part of its fourth overall assessment of climate change.

The consequences of rising temperatures are already being felt on every continent, warn the authors, and sooner than expected.

If the global average temperature rise is not kept below 2 degrees Celsius – which "currently looks very unlikely to be achieved" – up to 3.2 billion people will face water shortages and up to 600 million will face hunger, the report predicts.
