Climate change main cause of desertification, says UN

The spread of deserts is increasingly caused by climate change, rather than pressures exerted by local populations, the top UN climate official was reported as saying.

Reuters reported Yvo de Boer as saying on Wednesday that although people in dry areas were putting serious stress on the environment through over-grazing, water demand, deforestation and other activities, climate change was the greater threat.

"Climate change will change weather patterns even more … especially in Africa, rainfall is decreasing and climate change is exacerbating desertification. Climate change is probably the biggest factor," Reuters quoted de Boer as saying.
