Tuvalu warns about threat of global warming

Tuvalu has urged the rest of the world to do more to combat climate change before the tiny Pacific island state sinks beneath the ocean, Reuters reported on Thursday.

The group of atolls and reefs, home to some 10,000 people, is barely two metres above sea-level on average.

One study predicted that at the current rate the ocean is rising, Tuvalu could disappear in the next 30 to 50 years, the report said.

"We keep thinking that the time will never come," Reuters reported the Tuvalu deputy prime minister, Tavau Teii, as saying. "The alternative is to turn ourselves into fish and live under water,"
