The top 10 polluted places lie in seven countries and affect a total of more than 12 million people, the US-based Blacksmith Institute said.
Of the four new sites on the list, two are in India, one is in China and one is in the republic of Azerbaijan.
"The fact of the matter is that children are sick and dying in these polluted places, and it’s not rocket science to fix them," said Richard Fuller, founder and director of Blacksmith Institute.
In a confusing turn of events, a number of press reports wrongly listed Tianjin, in north China, as one of the world’s most polluted places.
