China suspends plan to convert farmland into forest

Concerns for food security led China to suspend a plan to convert 10,700 square kilometres of farmland into forest, Xinhua said on Tuesday.

The government will continue to provide subsidies to farmers who have converted their farmland into forest, the agency said.
