Indian court permits dismantling of ‘toxic ship’

India's Supreme Court gave the go-ahead on Tuesday for a Norwegian cruise liner to be dismantled, Reuters reported, despite protests from environmental groups who say the ship is carrying hazardous waste.

The 46,000-tonne Blue Lady has been at the centre of a controversial legal battle between environmentalists and India’s ship-breaking industry since June last year, when the ship was allowed to anchor off the coast of India’s western state of Gujarat.

The ship contains more than 900 tonnes of toxic waste like asbestos, say environmentalists, which may threaten the health of workers at Gujarat’s Alang ship-breaking yard.
