China vows to clean up toxins in food

China will crack down on foods contaminated with chemicals, Reuters quoted the country's top agriculture official as saying, amid rising concerns about toxins in meat, seafood and vegetables.

"Judging from monitoring, the acceptability rate of China's agricultural products is higher than it's ever been," Minister of  Agriculture Sun Zhengcai said in an interview in the People's Daily on Monday.

However, Sun also promised stiff action against farmers and producers who used banned chemicals.

"This crackdown campaign will be no mere formality," Sun said.
